About Scouting
Scouting has helped boys and girls to develop to their full potential and become responsible and useful members of society. These prominent Australians have all been influenced by Scouting – Dick Smith AO, Peter Beattie, Rove McManus, Peter Garrett, Sir Jack Brabham, Jamie Durie, Shane Jacobson, Bert Newton and Adam Spencer. Plus our local area politicians Hon Peter Dutton MP and Councillor Darren Grimwade.
These wonderful people were, or are, current Scouts – Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, David Beckham, Venus Williams, Mariah Cary, Neil Armstrong, Sir Paul McCartney, Peter Garrett, Billy Connolly, Harrison Ford, Celine Dion, Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, Steven Spielberg, Patrick Stewart, Bear Grylls, Michael J Fox, Nelson Mandela, John Lennon, Keith Richards, David Attenborough, Tony Blair, Michael Parkinson and David Bowie. Of the 12 men that have walked on the moon… 11 were Scouts.
Scouting is over 100 years old. Founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell in the UK and based around his ethics, morals and beliefs about the training of young people to become useful and responsible members of society. The Movement grew spontaneously and today ‘Scouts’ is the largest youth organisation in the world with over 28 Million worldwide and 60,000 members in Australia.
The Scouting method is based on three main factors, ‘Duty to our Spiritual Beliefs’, ‘Duty to Self’ and ‘Duty to Others’ and Scouts all over the world make a Promise to live by the Scout Law.
Scouting is voluntary, educational and non-political and is available for all young people.
Our programs are flexible with a wide range of activities adapted to meet the needs of young people in the community. Activities are based on the interests of the young people with an emphasis on useful skills and service to others. Many activities make use of the 'outdoors' theme and have a spirit of adventure and a challenge.
Scouts everywhere:
• Have a firm commitment to a code of living (the Scout Promise and the Scout Law)
• Work together in small groups under their own (youth) leadership with adult assistance
• Participate in progressive and stimulating programs of varied activities
• Have a sense of service to the community
• Learn by doing
Scouting in the modern world is as relevant as ever before and some believe that it has greater application in light of
society’s intolerances and reliance on digital forms of entertainment and recreation.
The Scout Law
BE RESPECTFUL Be friendly. Care for others and the environment
DO WHAT IS RIGHT Be trustworthy, honest and fair. Use resources wisely
BELIEVE IN MYSELF Learn from my experiences. Face challenges with courage
