Further to the Scouts Queensland aim of ‘Sustainable Scouting in Sustainable Communities’, Samford Scout Group is developing a ‘Scouts Better World Garden’ (SBWG) to promote the aims of creating a better world for all. This is within the existing property area managed by the Samford Scout Group, to provide an additional activity area for Scouts and to promote Scouting to our local community.
Creating a Better World The Scout Movement has a strong commitment towards “Creating a Better World” which is literally about community involvement through Scouting. The Better World Framework was developed by the World Organization of the Scout Movement in partnership with the United Nations as part of the Sustainable Development Goals initiative. It allows Scouts to take action to create a better world, by focusing on community development in Scouting with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals – towards a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. The Better World Framework portfolio includes initiatives that address four areas of education. Each initiative contains challenges aimed at inspiring young people to become active citizens. The areas of education are: • Environment and Sustainability • Peace and Community Engagement • Health and Wellbeing • Skills for Life The garden will also promote education of the Scouts Australia Environment Charter of: • Protecting and Improving Biodiversity • Learning About the Environment and Inspiring Others • Enjoying and Connecting • Living Sustainable Lives by Taking Action to Reduce Negative Impacts • Thinking globally and acting locally Site Fit Out The site will have on the eastern side six table sets in each of the scout logo colours, a signature flagpole and low height native plants in special recycle planters. The western side will have special walkway and native plantings. We plan to install signage providing information on scouting, environmental education, indigenous and local history, local flora and fauna, and ways to contribute to creating a Better World. Services Water Supply for garden – In 2023 the Samford Scout Group installed a rainwater harvesting system and this has included plumbing to service this site Night use – in the future, we hope to secure funding to add lighting for night use as required by Scouts.
